  A CELEBRATION

I was not lucky enough to grow up in a country where July 4th was a beautiful holiday, celebrated by the entire nation. I always enjoyed it greatly, from the moment my feet touched the American soil.

This year, I received an unexpected celebration of my own. The mail brought me an invitation from the Riverdale Yonkers Society for Ethical Culture to an Annual Banquet “Honoring Our Elders”. I have been a member of this wonderful Society for twenty six years.

It was on Sunday June 26: 12.00 p.m. - Hors d’oeuvres
1.00p.m. - Buffet Luncheon. I did not have to pay and I could invite a friend.

We were about ten honorees, I guess I was the oldest.
Special seats were placed with our names, and we were conducted to the assigned place. My piano teacher was my partner. Then each one of us received a very fancy plaque - too heavy for me to bring and show you, but following are the contents. You might be interested in some of my past history:

1986, the Mets had won the world Series, the Challenger just had exploded just after launching, and “We Are the World” won Record of the Year Award. The same year, in November, guided perhaps by accurate hunches, you joined the Society along with your beloved husband Albert.

At the beginning, your desire to be of service landed you the reponsibility of keeping the Society financial books up to date.

Through the years, your inner, innate Muse continued to emerge and your love for music and poetry unfolded. You sang with the Choral Group and contributed many poems to Concern, our monthly newsletter.

In your own words, one can never go wrong when practicing discernment in favor of cordial and harmonious human relations.

USE YOUR GOOD VISION TO AVOID COLLISION

One cannot help but feel safe in your presence for your serene aura transmits spiritual peacefulness and further reflection.

Philosophical by nature, your prudence is best expressed in your poetry:

In life, if you reach the middle of the road,
The young and better part has passed.
Who knows how long you’re able to last.
Plan to make each day the very best,
And let your future do the rest!

You have given the Society your very best, indeed. Your wisdom is always welcome. Let wisdom lead the way in continuation of your life journey.
