Montserrat

Ronald Senator with Dom Irene Segarra, the director of the renowned choir of Montserrat Abbey, in a recent meeting. With Dom Segarra’s initiative, Montserrat renewed its traditional role as a great center of sacred music, seeking to embrace all that was numinous in twentieth century music. So was founded the Montserrat Composers’ Association for Sacred Music, which had the support of many renowned composers like Stravinsky, Messiaen, André Jolivet and Penderecki. Ronald Senator was invited to be a founding member. Conferences and Festivals of sacred music were held regularly at Montserrat itself, beginning in 1969. The one Festival outside of Montserrat was held in Liverpool, UK, in 1978, organized by an English committee chaired by Senator. This utilized the two Cathedrals, Catholic and Anglican, on either end of Hope Street, as well as the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall between them. This venue was suggested by Sir Malcolm Williamson, Master of the Queen’s Music, who had himself arranged a procession between the two Cathedrals as part of his celebration of the Queen’s 25th Coronation Anniversary. Among the many new works composed for the occasion was a Mass by Xavier Darasse, commissioned by the French Ministere de la Culture; a novel liturgy using word, music and dance with music by Peter Wiegold and dance by Irene Dilks; and the new Second Symphony by Anthony Milner for the Liverpool Philharmonic, commissioned jointly with the BBC and performed in the Philharmonic Hall with Jane Manning as soloist.
